A taste of summer

.
"You're going to turn me into a vegetarian" said Joseph, as I invited him to share this meal. Last time it was asparagus and mushrooms on the grill, this time sweet corn on the cob and string beans, simmered together.

Vegetarian? No..... not much chance of that. That grill has seen many a steak, and burger, and sausage, and kosher dog, and bacon, and...... meat. No, not vegetarian, but summer in Lancaster brings flavors of it's own. Some so good they just don't need a steak to complicate the issue.

Today, corn on the cob and string beans, both fresh. Simmered a short while in a pot of salted water with a few slices of good bacon tossed in for flavor. A slice of onion joins the fray while cooking.

Cooking time is only a short few minutes... just enough to make the beans tender and the corn crisp. Plated with several dabs of butter and a grind of pepper on the beans, it's a summer meal dripping flavor and memories.

I'm not turning this into a food blog. It's just that some things are too good not to share.

On another front... My friend in hospital is more comfortable, and we hope she'll be coming home within the week. I'm certain she'll be happier here. Tough lady she is, and dealing with this better than I would.

This morning... housekeeping. This afternoon, a rifle match with my son. More on that later.

One of the things I miss most about home in Ohio is the fabulous, fresh sweet corn. Many times it was the whole meal and we all dripped in butter and salt.
All our vegetables were fresh from Mom's garden. And we canned and froze enough to feed our family of seven very well until the next growing season.

All best wishes for your dear friend.
