Realistic expectations

.

Like I need something else to occupy my time.....

This receiver came my way, not to own, but as a 'See if you can get it working' kind of thing. It's a Realistic DX-160 short/long wave receiver, and was considered a pretty good unit in its day. Certainly respectable enough to put some effort into. I suppose I'll rig a wire loop around the wall and fade my memory back to the days when I took radios apart (as a kid) just to poke at their guts and see what happened. I well recall the WRrrrrrroOOOOOOooooo sound as I dialed the 'pots' on the circuit boards... the ones that had been sealed with a dab of glue to prevent tampering (HA!)

In my youth, when other kids were all talking about the new TV show 'Monty Python', my family had no TV. None of us cared either.... there were too many good books around the house. Still.... that show sounded interesting..... so I pulled apart a radio receiver and began tweaking the verboten interior dials... the ones that took a jewelers screwdriver to adjust. Soon enough I had the audio side of the TV broadcast, and spent more than a few late nights listening to the Python players as my mind matched pictures to the sounds I heard.

Those were good times.....

Now, where is my darned roll of antenna wire??

(update:  Listening to the rig now... and searching for an old fashioned can of 'pot cleaner' to spray out the potentiometers.  The blasted thing works pretty good, for being a $5 yard sale radio)

Well, congrats on your find. You will find radio is darn near as addictive as guns. Been addicted to both - since FDR was in the White House.

Check out ARRL.org for the end of hobby radio that lets you talk to someone. The end that almost forces you to learn about raising coffee in Kenya, copra in Tarawa, and many other things you didn't know you needed to know. Muy bueno!

Hallicrafters kits? Methink that should be HeathKits.

I think we had that exact radio when i was a kid. This post brought back memories of those Heath kits my dad and I used to put together. It also brought back the memory of burned arm hair. Don't ask.
